In the long list of Final Fantasy games, 12 ranks in the top 3 for me (Buy me a drink and I’ll tell you the other 2). When it came out on the PlayStation 2 my mom got me the collector’s edition with the steel book. So when I heard that Square-Enix was remastering it and adding some new stuff I immediately flipped my shit. Not my literal shit cause that would be pretty disgusting. Like foul. But figuratively. I was excited about it and I definitely made sure I preordered on Amazon to make sure I got the steel book again.
Final Fantasy 12 is a long game. The main story is at least 58 hours. For my Persona 5 review, I played for more than 100 hours. So in order to avoid not ever writing about it, I started a new thing where I’ll write something about it whenever I play it. So, in reality, this’ll be one long ass review, but it’ll be broken up over different articles.
Like I said earlier, I loved FFXII however, it wasn’t as loved amongst the masses. The biggest reason why would be because of the Gambit system. Imagine being able to tell your AI team members that when someone’s health dropped below 50%, they should cast Cura. That’s exactly what the Gambit system was. Creating mini coding if/then statements to better your life as a player. 2006 Darius didn’t quite understand the gambit system. 2017 Darius thinks the Gambit system is amazing and I feel super smart using it. I’m about 10 hours into the game and I’ve probably spent 1 hour total messing around with setting up different macros in the gambit system. I’m enjoying it a whole lot more the second go round.
FFXII is set in Ivalice, which shares its universe with Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy Tactics. It is a high fantasy world, so there’s a lot of airships and knights and shit. It’s probably one of the more political Final Fantasy, it revolves around 2 warring nations: the Archades (evil) and the resistance led by Ashe, who happens to be the princess of Dalmasca. This sounds very similar to another major sci-fi franchise that I won’t mention but it rhymes with Car Stores. A lot of the characters in the game are also very similar to the characters in Car Stores. Except for Vaan. Fuck Vaan. He’s terrible. 10 hours in and I remembered how much I hated him in 2006. Fuck Vaan.
So far, I’m having a ton of fun with this game. It’s a good counter to Persona 5, which after 100+ hours, I could probably use a good break from. Over the next few weeks/months, I’ll update the site with more impressions and a final verdict on the game. I can tell you now though, I loved it back then, and I still love it now. Especially the new job system. Oh, I’ll have to go into more detail about that on part 2. So that you’ll have something to look forward to. If you’re playing through FFXII, let me know how you’re liking it. Unless you like Vaan. If you like Vaan fuck you and him. Well not so much you, I can learn to like and maybe even love you, but really fuck Vaan.
