Game I Wanna Play: Dragon Ball FighterZ

August 18, 2017, Author: VizualLeader

If you know me, you know that I love Dragon Ball Z. A lot. When I was a kid I tried to go super Saiyan. It didn’t work but I digress. I remember all (most) of the old DBZ games. My friends and I would play import versions of Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout and Dragon Ball Z: Idainaru Dragon Ball Densetsu also known as Dragon Ball Z: Legends. The full translation is  “The Greatest Dragon Ball Legend”. Had no idea what the menus said, but we at least knew how to get to the versus screen. I really liked Final Bout even though it was terrible, and was sad that I wouldn’t get another Dragon Ball Z fighting game until 2002 when the Budokai series hit the PS2. I’m not gonna go into full details about the series, but I will tell you that I had a beastly Kid Buu in Budokai 3 and the Dragon Ball Z Budokai forums felt his wrath. (Shoutout to S.U.I. on the off-hand chance someone from there reads this)

Fast-forward to 2017. We’ve had a few good fighters, but a lot more bad ones. None of them captured the essence of Dragon Ball Z. Until now. Unveiled at E3 this year was Dragon Ball FighterZ, a 2.5D fighter that is made by the guys that did the Guilty Gear series, Arc System Works. If the final product is anything like the early looks I’ve gotten to see of the game, then this could go down as the best and most faithful DBZ game. It’s a 3 on 3 fighter, similar to Marvel vs. Capcom. Visually, this game looks perfect. It looks like an exceptional recreation of the anime, and with the popularity of Dragon Ball Super right now, this is the perfect look for the new game.

One of the things that in my opinion plagued previous Dragon Ball Z games is that they felt the need to include every character from the game. Like Zarbon is cool, but did I really need him to be playable in a game? Nah b. Dragon Ball FighterZ so far has a small roster, and I’m not mad at it. So far here are all the confirmed characters:

  • Cell
  • Future Trunks
  • Final Form Frieza
  • Teen Gohan (Best Gohan)
  • Goku
  • Vegeta
  • Innocent Buu
  • Krillin
  • Piccolo
  • Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta
  • Super Saiyan Blue Goku
  • Android 18
  • Android 16

No release date yet for DBFZ, but we know it’ll at least be early next year. closed beta for the game will be available this September, and sign-ups start on August 22. Hopefully, I get into the beta, but I can’t wait to play this next year. Who else do you think they should add to roster list? I’m hoping for Super Saiyan Rosé Goku Black. Hit me up on Twitter and let me know!
